Business Story That Sells: The Hero’s Journey

If you’re wondering how to use your story in a way that converts ideal soulmate clients every time you press “live”, this blog post is for you!

See, people are bombarded daily with so many different messages that it leaves them with one core question: what’s in it for me?

And most entrepreneurs create content that’s very THEM-centric, without ever thinking about what their audience actually wants.

Let’s take Harry Potter as an example.

Harry is the hero of the story.

Most entrepreneurs make themselves Harry Potter – whereas their customers are actually Harry.

You’re always Dumbledore, leading the way forward!

In short, your soulmate fans are the ones who need to be at the center of your business – even if you are a personal brand!

So, let’s dive into the 5 steps to getting your brand story together:

#1 Know your hero

When your soulmates come to discover you, they need to feel that you “get them”. The thing that most people tell me over and over again is that I get inside their head… and that’s because they’re the hero in my brand story!

So, you’ve got to think about your outwards content as that prologue… it’s the thing that makes your character discover that they have a problem and that you’re the person to help them.

Make your customer the main character of the story, the center of your landing pages, the center of your emails, the center of EVERYTHING that you do.

If you have been doing your copy the other way around, it is time to change course.

I know that taking a backseat in your own business may sound counterproductive, but it is not. Sure, your target customers want to know how you can help them, but at this point, they do not care a bit about you or your history. They do not care about your backstory, how and when you started your business, or your struggles as an entrepreneur.

You may talk about these things as you go down the line to build that trust factor, but not in that initial entry point into your business (or launch for that matter).

Remember, your customers only care about how you can actually help them. Put them at the center of your business story, make them your sole focus, and see how this delivers results.

#2 Actually pick a hero

Now that you know who the hero in the hero’s journey should be, the next thing you need to identify is your soulmate avatar.

And as I type this, I can FEEL you shiver with dread at the word niche down!

But truly, the riches are in the niches.

Can you imagine if JK Rowling decided to do an alternating chapter focusing on ALL the characters of Harry Potter?

Yeah, me neither.

The soulmate avatar is not supposed to dehumanize your ideal customer, nor it is supposed to be some kind of a filler. It’s literally just a way for you to zero in on that perfect human so you can magnetise him or her on repeat.

Every time you speak, write an email, write on your website, tweak something on your website, write a caption for your Instagram photo or write a post on Facebook, think about your avatar.

Of course, you are catering to different people, and it is almost impossible to find an exact replica of your ideals, but knowing what makes your ideal avatar tick, knowing how and why they are motivated, will help you with the next steps in the hero’s journey…

#3 Get Clear on the BIG PROBLEM.

Your ideal soulmate client has a big problem (i.e. their pain point) and you are here to help them solve that problem.

The first step here is to establish yourself as your customer’s guide—that one person who can understand them and will take them through the tough times. Show them that you understand their problem and put yourself on the path to show them the actual problem that they have.

The catch: many customers are not aware that they actually have a problem to solve. Hence, your task is to make them see that problem and make them realize that you are the one who can help them overcome that problem.

But how do you offer help to someone who does not even know that he or she has a problem?

For example, I know that most of my soulmate clients think their launch is broken or the offer is an issue – but in actual reality, it’s often just a messaging issue.

Same can be said for one of my recent clients who is a leadership mentor. The problem was that her soulmate clients didn’t wake up every morning thinking: “if only I could be a leader today!”

Instead, they were waking up exhausted and frustrated because their team was not performing the tasks needed and so the entrepreneur would have to stay up late re-doing the work they were paying others to do!

Awful, right?

So, what most entrepreneurs do is they say:

“Hey, you’ve got a problem with leadership in your business”

But the truth is, the clients that truly need them and their products hear that and think, “erm, I don’t, but thanks.”

Instead, what they need to hear is the ACTUAL problem they’re having.

So instead of: “be a better leader” we move to “do you want to have a team that works like a well-oiled machine?”

Boom.

We’re clear on the actual problem our clients have.

If you approach your soulmates that way, they will think: “hallelujah! Someone has finally understands exactly what I want. Let me grab my credit card.”

#4 Have a roadmap to their success

As a business owner, you need to give your character a plan and map it out for them.

So let’s say you’re a fitness coach who has a course on how to get a rounder butt in 14 days.

Your plan may literally be: from day one to day fourteen we do five sets of the same exercise until the butt becomes a round peach.

While a plan as straightforward as that may be obvious, it’s scientifically proven that our brain likes step-by-step actions.

Our clients want a roadmap to success. Get clear on what are the specific and tangible steps you take in your process to get them there.

Ideally, your plan should be between three to six steps. A great sales process does two things: first, it lays out messaging that converts, and second, it lays out exactly the steps that customers should be taking.

As you create a roadmap for your customers, tell them how you are going to take them from step one to step two, step three, step four, and so on.  Bonus points if you create some sort of graphic or structure to showcase this plan!

#5 Get inside their head

Customers are not called customers for no reason. They are customers because they want a solution, because they need someone like you to show them that you understand them.

They need you to know about them and their needs, not about your amazing success record or your awesomeness.

So if you’re using testimonials, show them what is possible for them.

If you’re using your own before and after story, does it align with your ideal client’s story too?

Stories are REALLY powerful when you’re selling, but you’ve got to make sure that yours align with that of your soulmate clients.

When you have a brand story that positions your ideal soulmate client as the hero, shows them that you know their problem and therefore can solve it through a simple roadmap… that’s when your brand story will start to make you sales on autopilot.

So… how do you actually use this structure to get more clients?

Don’t worry, I’m not just leaving you hanging! I want to show you my roadmap for implementing this process…
